When a Professional Dental Cleaning is Needed
A professional cleaning allows the veterinarian to look deeper than what is visible during an exam. A dental procedure may include:
- Pre-anesthetic bloodwork to be sure it’s safe to proceed
- A full-mouth exam under anesthesia for a calm, pain-free experience
- Scaling and polishing above and below the gumline
- Dental X-rays to assess roots and bone health
- Treatment or extractions as needed
All cleanings are performed under anesthesia to keep pets comfortable and allow for a complete, thorough cleaning—especially under the gumline where most dental disease begins.
Signs of Dental Disease
Because many pets continue eating normally even when uncomfortable, small changes can be easy to miss. Families may notice:

Brushing teeth with pet-safe toothpaste is the gold standard, and many families pair it with dental chews, water additives, or VOHC-approved products for extra support.
